Liniștea tăcerilor permeabile

Rudy Roth
Rudy Roth

The Stillness of Pervious Silences

Translated into English by Ana-Maria Duță

Ana-Maria Duță
Ana-Maria Duță

The truth is that it was simply impossible for me to say something. And when I say ”something”, I don’t mean some line worthy of a Hollywood script. Or even some stupid remark from a tenth-rate soap opera. But ”something”, in the sense of anything. An onomatopoeic sequence or at least one of random sounds that could somehow, in any way, break the burdensome silence that had settled between us… The silence after that ”In April we’re leaving for Sydney… Permanently”. The silence that had fallen on my shoulders, on my dreams, and on my thoughts, like a sentence…that had transformed me, at once, in an impostor in my own love story.

It was raining… The skies were pouring over Cișmigiu like in some sort of directorial improvisation done by the Bucharest autumn. And there we were, in the middle of this miniature deluge, side by side. Surrounded by a heavy stillness which left no room for words. Relentlessly hit by drops of water that, at least in my case, had an amniotic trait. Pressed by an emotional vice that made time suddenly seem narrow… At one point I took her in my arms and, almost instantly, I felt her diving into them. It was nearly the same as the first time we hugged. And I know that all I wanted was to be able to cry with her. In that rain that fell over Cișmigiu’s ruins and over our illusions.

Up until that moment, Andreea and I had been ”officially” dating for two months, three days and almost an hour. That was in other people’s time. According to our time, many eternities had passed us by. Eternities that had caused me to not belong to myself anymore. That had made me, for the second time in my life, renounce my anti-falling-in-love principle. That had taken me out of the routine of fleeting nights and emotions…

Long after our story had become a memory, I wondered if my love for Andreea had been only the work of my pride. Because, for her, I had been the first one. The first to whom she had decided to offer her body, her dreams, thoughts, and caresses. Could that be, I often asked myself, what had actually made me imagine a parallel reality when it came to us? Could it be that my entire mental construction and all emotions had been, in fact, only some Adamic alpha-male lapses? Had I been, as my friends used to say, just another fool?

Back then, though, in our time, nothing could touch me. Only she could. Every night of love spent in her embrace was only a step towards a reconquista of my soul. A liberation from the shackles of self-control. The truth is that her way of losing herself in pleasure used to amuse me terribly. It was something between fear and wonder, as if she was ashamed by the way in which she acted when she felt pleasure. By the fact that she couldn’t control her body and mind during those moments of paroxysm. And beyond all of these, by me living every sensation through her. And unconsciously undertaking them, as if they were my own.

I don’t know for how long we stayed there, embraced in the stillness of that rain. Perhaps an hour, perhaps less. Anyway, we were aware that it was going to be the last time when, together, we belonged only to our time. And the first time when our silences became pervious. When they overflowed with water and sadness.

The last time we made love was the morning she left for the airport. I wouldn’t have wanted to. In fact, up until then, I had kept trying to supress my need for her arms and her smile. And to be able to offer myself, cold and lucid, to any other woman who would have wanted me. But I couldn’t. Not until then, nor long after that… Sometimes we talk and I feel how both of us continue to regret that time of ours. And, obviously, the fact that we can’t even look at the same sky…

Mda. A capitulat cam repede. Ciudat fluturele ăsta. E aproape uman.

Moth

Translated into English by Sorina Lincă

Sorina Lincă
Sorina Lincă

‘ve been sitting here for about half an hour, watching him. Speechless. Like at the movies. Obviously, I’m intrigued by the fact that, of all the windows in the world, he chose mine, and, even more so, he did it as if he sensed that his attitude was defying every shred of focus I had left at the end of a tiring day. His presence intrigues me. I feel like going to rummage through the kitchen for some caffeine to pamper my taste buds, but it would most likely be foolish to believe that I will find anything. I’d better light another cigarette.

I’m smoking slowly, almost passionately, staring at this motionless insect stuck to the wall with crazy stoicism, and the truth is, I don’t get its logic. What the hell was going on in its moth mind – assuming it even has one – when it came and invaded the dimness of my world? Well, the hell knows. Anyway, it annoys me. I would reach out to catch it in the palm of my hand. Better not, I don’t have a reason…

In its insect mind – and again, I wonder if it even has one – it probably does not understand what is happening to it or where it is. Just like me, actually. Is it afraid? Perhaps. In a way, so am I. In fact, maybe just as I feel myself beginning to retreat into my shell, it feels like it’s being somehow held back from flying. A stupid and premature return to darkness. And if I think about it carefully, there are actually similarities between my shards and walls and its cocoon.

I draw another puff on my cigarette and wonder if it remembers anything. Maybe the first burst of light, the first spread of its wings after leaving the chrysalis, the first time it rose from the ground, clumsily at first and then more and more freely, ever more freely. Probably not, after all, damn it, it’s a butterfly! Actually, who knows? Tomorrow, or the day after, I’ll learn from a documentary on National Geographic that butterflies have memory. I’d better not underestimate it. If it does have memory, then it probably remembers its life inside the dry wall of its world of shadows and – most likely – the illusions it sold to itself when it perceived the sounds coming from beyond. If it has memory, then it too fed on chimeras while waiting for certainties… just like me.

I remember reading somewhere that butterflies innately feel the need to fly almost continuously during their few hundred hours of life. Perhaps it is because they sense their flight even before they feel the cool warmth of the light beyond the wall of the chrysalis. So, these insects do nothing but fly, without reason, without a reference system? That’s just weird. Strange, at least. But beautiful. After all, we too dream of freedom, of flying, but we shackle ourselves with all sorts of rules, prejudices, and pride.

Yes, I’ve caught it! I don’t like the feel of its wings. They’re almost damp. I hold it between my palms, giving it enough room to move, but not enough to see the light. Yeah. It surrendered pretty quickly. What a strange butterfly. It’s almost human. Or maybe it likes the feel of human skin, although I don’t think so. I throw it out the window and I can’t even see where it goes. Probably because of its impossible colour. Actually, it doesn’t matter. It can go to its world of wet wings…
