Arzându-mă cu întrebările-i de gheață

Tablouri interioare

Îmi umblă în spatele ochilor
Ca niște moaște proscrise
Amintirea surâsului tău
Cu ușile sale închise

Pe străzile-ntunecate ale tăcerii
Trec umbrele bunului nostru rămas
Dorm în azilul uimirii lampagii
Și-n burgul rostirii nu-i loc de popas

Poeții cei mari de la curte
Împovărați de ofrande ți se închină versați
În sufletu-mi rămâne aceeași grădină
Din care cândva am fost alungați

Ecoul unei întâmplări albastre

În fiecare răsărit văd un apus
Precum nisipuri neumblate spală
Plutirea ta în pasul presupus
Să fie-nchis în coliliile de-o vară
Ce trecător nimicul mistuie sărutul
Rămâne doar ecoul întâmplării
Când umbra-i cade peste lutul

Ce să-i dau morții

Ce să-i dau morții ca să plece
Fără de mine în tăcerea ei întunecată
Și să rămân în dragostea-ți ce mă petrece
Cu flori și cântec deodată
Sărutul tău mi-e veșnică grădină
Împrejmuită cu miresme și lumini
În aer aud șuier, mărul în căderea-i lină

Fără-a mărturisi vreodată
Această bântuire fără de descântec
Ca o nălucă pururi lepădată

Și mi se-mpleticește limba în rostire
Și se-nnorează-n cerul sfânt al gurii
Poveștile se mistuie-n tăcerea din rotire
Și fug din portativul partiturii

Poems (1)

Translated into English by Costina Spînu

Ladima’s (1) letter to the shadow of an actress

Your smile is like a summer to me, and a night
And in your whispers hides a symphony with might
Along your dance the flax-field turns all blue
And make an angel’s wing change into blue too
Let it beat above the willows, above the trees
That hide within their branches loves left at ease
Your silence is like The Bed of Procrustes to me
Its very edge so august as a blade might be
And sometimes you fleetingly appear to me
So my dry eyes turn into spring – breaking free
And from within the Sphinx awakens into life
Breaking me with its questions – cold as ice knife

Inner portraits

Behind my eyes they drift and rise
Like outlawed relics – all exiled
The memory of your smile living still
With all its doors forever concealed

By the darkened streets of silence pass
The shadows of our goodbye that remained a guest
The lamplighters sleep in wonder’s refuge fast,
And in the town of words there is no place to rest

The great court poets, laden with their praise
Bow down to you, accomplished in their art
Yet in my soul the same old garden stays
The one from which we both were cast apart

The echo of a blue encounter

In every sunrise, I see a sunset
As untouched sands wash the drifting trace
Of your floating step in its imagined silhouette
To be confined in summer’s spear-grass sway
Whatever fleeting nothingness consumes from the kiss
The echo of the encounter will be the one to remain
When its shadow falls upon the clay like this
Embraced by the bottom of the sea, pulled by a chain
Not one thread in the meadow of dried shells
Can bring to life the rarest grain of pearl
And like smoke a sea of sins dwells
Then fall asleep inside the glass of wine – I swirl

Psalm for a Christmas without us

Lord, make me a snowfall
To knock with silence on your eyelid as shelter
Imagining half of a question
So no one may know me inside and out.

Lord, transform me into a song of endless steppe
To be trampled beneath the hoofbeats of the nogai
And from the curse of unfulfilled love
Reborn me in the light of a new king

Pass through me like a city with winter trees aglow
With all its garlands of wonder bright and strange
Make snow fall over me with footsteps in the hidden glow
From nights where dead stars linger in your gaze

And make me, Lord, the wood of the Cross
To burn within your soul serene and still
Through one brief night, so sweet in its loss
With tender gestures words could never fill

What shall I give to Death

What shall I give to Death, that she may depart
And go without me in her darkened night
So I can remain with your love beside my heart
With flowers and song to carry me into the light
Your kiss is my everlasting garden
Enclosed in perfume and light
In the air I hear the apple falling like a bargain
And ruined iconostases beneath olive trees at night
A bride with neither altar nor blessing
Her hand stretched towards me
From your dampened candle drops are descending
Rebellious as the desolations of the sea

Nights that know no final sentence

I long for you as one longs for dawn
with waterlilies, swans and cranes
as a monastic tavern left withdrawn
robbed by singers and hunters with all it takes
your smile is my bone horn (2) beneath the moon
a haunting lied (3) that writes in your eyes
love flashing like the lightning of a storm
in signs that herald the redemption of the skies
how beautiful you are, just like the absence feels
in your undefeated distance
and nights that know no final sentence
bury you beneath a silver darkness

Endless turning

No knot can bind yesterday to today
No wings beat back towards the track
The nomads’ road winds endlessly away
And truth hides somewhere in ”perhaps”’.

We bury lost loves in songs
Never confess what we dread
This haunting for which no spell belongs
Like a ghost that is forever fled

My tongue grows tangled in the words I utter
And clous gather beneath my mouth’s sacred sky
The stories melt away in the turning silence
And flee the stave of the music written by

Leviathan, Year IX, No 3 (32), July–September 2026,
pg. 62–63

(1) A tragic character, poet, and uncompromising journalist from Camil Petrescu’s psychological novel The Bed of Procrustes (later mentioned in the poem). He loves a woman whom he tragically idealizes, sacrificing himself for her. This fact becomes relevant to the better understanding of the text.

(2) A literal rendering of the Romanian ”corn de os’’, evoking a horn made from bone and its archaic ritualistic associations. The unusual expression is retained to preserve the poem’s surreal imagery.

(3) The musical term ”lied” refers to the principal melodic line or a prominent solo part in a musical composition. It is kept in the English translation because the original deliberately introduces musical terminology into the image of the beloved’s smile and gaze.
