Statuia
(fragment)

The Statue
(fragment)
Translated into English by Ruxandra Bujor

What is a statue? A trace, a caricature, a punishment? I am wondering too, I can’t help it. I am the statue of an important man for this nation. Why is he so important, what did he do? Don’t ask me, I have no way of knowing, I’m just a piece of carved stone. But surely he did something of value, otherwise they wouldn’t have made a statue of him. And a group of people who placed flowers at my feet and a wreath on my head and who gave passionate speeches, some even tearing, wouldn’t have come year after year, on the same day of the year. I never understood the words they were saying, the stone I am carved from was brought from a different country.
I say ”what they were saying”, I speak in the past tense because it has been decades since the ceremonies stopped. It seems that today they are no longer interested in us. In us, those on this park alley. I am not alone. I see, as much as it is allowed for a statue that cannot turn its head, that I have companions in suffering. Not only now, when we have become, due to carelessness, to permanent degradation, caricatures of those we represent, but even long ago, except for the moments of glory when ceremonies were held for us, we felt marginalized, abandoned and ignored. If a committee of an official institution or cul- tural organization had not come once a year, we could say that no one else set foot on our alley. It was as if they did not even want to come closer, as if we inspired fear in them, as if they felt a cold shiver, stone cold, down their spines. The youth surely avoided us like the devil avoids incense, in so many years I haven’t seen a young person on this alley. I think we aroused their repulsion, we were too cold and austere, we demanded too much respect. I’m sure we also caused them embarrassment, that of not having any idea who the illustrious people had been who were so honored that they were embodied in stone here. They were afraid that, if they stepped on the alley, they would be reproached for their lack of culture and indifference towards their ancestors.
A couple of elders would wander around, would look at our faces, at the names written on the pedestals, and I could tell from their gestures, their facial expressions, the looks they were exchanging that they were happy to find one’s name receiving so much honor, they were surprised that someone else had been honored in the same way even though they didn’t deserve it, and, in front of someone else, they would ask themselves ”who could this be?” Then they would shuffle away and, probably, forget what they had seen. As soon as they left the alley, they would disappear without ever returning. […]
