Aventura cuvintelor

The Adventure of Words

Translated into English by Elena-Andreea Udrea

These people launch trend after trend according to… Actually, according to what or whom? According to them, to the people, to the ideas, to the interests, to just go through the motions because that’s what people do! But the newest trend, which is actually an old one, but more put together, more colourful, more aromatic, is a bit more sophisticated than its grand-grand-grandmother because there are more ways to present it, there are more channels for publicity, and as a last resort, there is the artificial intelligence to aid it etc.

Let’s cut to the chase and tell you about this new-old trend. Nowadays, people eat – what an odd pursuit! – or, better said, they swallow the words, both the said and unsaid ones. The latter can’t be left on their own since who knows what would they say, that’s why they’re words, they want to make themselves heard. The worst case is when the mouth talks without thinking about the words, because now it’s trendy for them to spread faster than we ever imagined. The ones that fear the most their whimsy (it would be closer to the truth to call it the naughtiness of the words!) are the ones that swallow the words in a hurry lest they get away and get put back in their mouth, but more grave, targeting, insinuatingly, even as nonsense, and unleash the rage of other words since who knows what other dangerous sentences they make – you expect any combination, because they, once out of their leash, forget the rules, the fear, the conflicts, they don’t think about coordination or subordination, where applicable, and that’s how the chairs start having fun, laughing out loud at the words’ madness, and the ones sitting on the chair – beautiful, comfortable, elegant as they are, of course – have to write other words, harsh combinations, fortresses made of words, trying to prove that the other ones are lying, insinuating, mean, even dangerous! The professional word-swallowers, important people, don’t really have time or stomach to swallow every nonsense word and they authorize someone else, people that are said to posses the knowledge about the power of words, to catch them, to polish them, to put them in favourable contexts in order to stop the law words (some insufferable  “beings”, as a matter of fact) to give verdicts in their own lawish way. Is lawish right? Well, what if it’s not? Right or wrong, we make up other words to throw off balance the others, to gain time to think, to search in mom and dad’s dictionary if there is a new child brought from who knows what corner of the world and adopted without too much effort. This adoption, of words, naturally, has become something awful! You barely open your mouth and bam!, there’s a new word (it appears too where there’s room for it!) that has occidental roots, usually, and looks down on others, and sends the authentic words to the junk pile. Now what do the other words do? They highjack the television and drag each other through the mud and not even the law words can detangle in time the others’ web of lies.

Sometimes they pull each other’s hair too, and the problem is that all of them know how to spit, which is dangerous during this season of influenza, of colds and even of COVID types, mild ones, of course, and, just like that, some are forced into quarantine (here is obviously the work of the law words!). But they don’t spend too much time there because the people that gather the others’ words invented aromatic baths for terms. This is their job, to wash them until they go white, until they get rid of the influenza, of the cold or even of the weak COVID (I mean what is left of the COVID wave). Then the words gatherers-washers bring clear proof that the accused are clean, innocent and honest. And that’s how the history of words is written, that’s how appears the trend of swallowing or cleaning them until everyone is shaking of fear or of enthusiasm, but not at the same time. Because that’s trendy!
